The "Good Witches" (Vice President Cora Stovall O'Kelley and Executive Director Cheryl Powe) of Good Deeds International (GDI), LLC, made a surprise visit to the little "gobblins" of The Andrew and Walter Young Family Southwest YMCA in Atlanta, Georgia. Little DeVanni Powe also accompanied her GDI mom to help share the halloween treats for the kids. Were they ever delighted!
GDI's continued quest to reach out to the community sharing "Good Deeds" took on a new sweet flavor Friday, October 30, as they showered the after school care kids of the Y with many great choices of Halloween treats. Even some of the staff, after school teachers and parents took part in sharing the delectable little sticky, oowey, gooey pieces of double bubble, hershey kisses, sweet tarts, candy corn, toostie rolls, sugar daddys and the list goes on and on.
The Andrew and Walter Young Family Southwest YMCA was named for Andrew Jackson Young, Jr., American politican, diplomat and pastor from Georgia who served as Mayor of Atlanta, a Congressman from the 5th district and the United States Ambassador to the United Nations, and supporter and friend of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and his brother, Walter Young, who has been a prominent member of the southwest community for many years. Like his father, Andrew Jackson Young, Sr., Walter is a dentist whose practice is located near The Andrew and Walter Young Family Southwest YMCA.
Although The Andrew and Walter Young Southwest Family YMCA offers many enrichment programs for children, GDI targeted their child care program during this visit, including their Early Learning Academy and Prime Time Afterschool Care. Their Early Learning Academy is an innovative preschool program for children ages six months to four years. The Prime Time program provides after school care for children from Pre-K to 5th grade.
Vice President O'Kelley and Executive Director Powe were warmly greeted and welcomed by the YMCA's Senior Wellness Director Blanche Payne and Executive Director Diane Baker-King. Executive Director King picked up the telephone and called Ambassador Young while GDI was in her office and they shared greetings. Ambassador Young's wife, Carolyn Watson Young, has been a past student of True Passion Steppers (Devan and Cheryl Powe, Lead Instructors). He encouraged Executive Director Powe to "stay after his wife to get back to steppin' class."
Stay tuned for future plans of GDI to partner with the Andrew and Walter Young Southwest Family YMCA on other outreach community initiatives for the kids in the Atlanta metro area.
