GDI SHARES QUALITY TIME WITH THE “SILVER SNEAKERS” – ON THE BEAUTIFUL LAKE OCONEE

Good Deeds International President/CEO Cora O’Kelley and GDI Ambassadors Carolyn Dixon and Emma Hicks hosted a beautiful luncheon outing with the “Seniors” of the “Silver Sneakers” Fitness class on Thursday, October 4, 2012, on    the quiet and serene Lake Oconee, in Eatonton, Georgia.

The weather couldn’t be more perfect!  It was a breezy 75 degrees, the sun was shining, the lake was quiet since it was a workday with little boating activity, and the food was plentiful!!  The Silver Sneakers arrived to Lake Oconee on a late-modeled Chartered Coach and close to 50 of them enjoyed lunch, games, line dancing and special beverages prepared just for them.

The food, catered by Herman and Val Driskell was fit for Royalty.  They had salad of all sorts, fruit, chicken pasta, seafood, crab cakes, desserts of cakes, pies and cheesecakes—they wanted for nothing!

GDI pampered the “Silver Sneakers” from head to toe—after eating, they did some of their favorite line dances, played bingo and enjoyed the wonderful view of the beautiful Lake Oconee.  They all said they wanted to come back one day real soon!

Hats off to the “Silver Sneakers” who love living life to the fullest…such an inspiring group of ladies.

GDI Road Race

When you walk in a Making Strides Against Breast Cancer event, you help the American Cancer Society save lives. GDI’s President Cora O’Kelley and Vice President Cheryl Powe attended the 14 th Annual MSABC Kickoff Breakfast held Friday, August 10, 2012, at the Intercontinental Buckhead Hotel in Atlanta, Georgia, Donna Lowry, WXIA-TV, Emcee. For the 6th year in a row, GDI has participated in this 5K walk in support of the American Cancer Society inspiring efforts to unite communities as they honor those who have battled breast cancer, spread the word about what they can do to help prevent breast cancer and raise money to find cures and support programs and services for those facing the disease.
This year’s 5K event will be held Saturday, October 6, 2012, at Centennial Olympic Park, Atlanta. GDI is looking for team members to be a part of the Heritage Ball Team and help to surpass their 2011 $500 monetary goal , which the team successfully raised. This year, we are striving to double that amount and are confident with the help and support of so many from the Atlanta Communities, this is highly
achievable.
Thanks to the dollars raised by Making Strides supporters, the American Cancer Society is saving lives and helping more people facing breast cancer celebrate birthdays. Make plans today…..

Cora American Kidney Foundation

GDI sponsored its first ever 5K Heritage Ball 2012 Road Race for Charity and all the proceeds from this very successful Road Race were donated to the American Kidney Fund, who was one of many health care providers in attendance of the Heritage Ball 2012 Health Fair.
Noni Walker Redding, Southeast Region Associate Director, was onsite with her team providing American Kidney Fund screenings and educational material to Heritage Ball goers. Noni is also shown here accepting the donation for AKF from GDI’s President Cora O’Kelley for all the help they provide to the community at large.
26 million American adults have Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) and millions of others are at increased risk. Early detection can help prevent the progression of kidney disease to kidney failure. Heart disease is the major cause of death for all people with CKD. High risk groups include those with diabetes, hypertension and family history of kidney disease. African Americans, Hispanics, Pacific Islanders, Native Americans and Seniors are at increased risk.
Good Deeds International will continue their commitment to Health and Wellness as one of their corporate tenets. Each year at the Heritage Ball, an annual Health Fair is conducted and a large effort is put forth to ensure attendees take advantage of the many health and wellness services available during this weekend of celebration.
Real Man Cook 2012 DevanFor the second consecutive year, GDI’s Devan Powe participated in the 23 rd Anniversary Real Men Cook for Charity 2012, held for the first time at the Georgia World Congress Center, downtown Atlanta, on Father’s Day, June 17. Other GDI members onsite were President Cora O’Kelley, Vice President and wife of Devan, Cheryl Powe, Treasurer Kim Davis and CFO Melanie Fields. Ambassadors Gloria Etherly and Purman Lockman were onsite as well to help GDI during this great affair.
The chefs competed in several categories (Amateurs and Professionals), Appetizer, Entrée and Dessert. Chef Devan’s delicious dish was jerk chicken and rice with peas, and it was quite delicious. The lines were long at his station to get some of his tasty vittles. GDI is so supportive of Devan’s willingness to represent his culinary skills at such a huge and successful event. We appreciate him going the extra miles to prepare food for so many Real Men Cook Charity attendees and his commitment to the family cause, especially on Father’s Day.
Real Men Cook Charities Inc., is a part of the White House national fatherhood leadership group
and is the nonprofit sponsor of Real Men Cook, the nation’s largest urban family celebration which promotes responsible fatherhood. The organization’s mission is to positively improve the way the world celebrates family and community by increasing the proportion of opportunities for committed and detached males to become involved, responsible and committed fathers for the good of all communities families and youth.
There was plenty of entertainment and activities for the whole family and some 5,000 attendees participated in this year’s event.
